Influencer Spotlight

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on fashion, lifestyle and parenting influencer, Lily Yange! Lily is a GTA-based influencer and mom to an extremely fashionable and witty, soon-to-be 5-year-old named Felix. When she’s not sharing her favourite looks and inspirational content on Instagram, you can find her featured in luxurious fashion magazines including Vogue Italia and InStyle. She’s also one of the beautiful faces of H&M and Sephora Canada – get it, girl!

I’ve been a fan of Lily’s for a few years now and she’s been very open on social media about how challenging it’s been being an influencer during a global pandemic. I thought she would be a great addition to our Influencer Spotlight series so I reached out and she happily agreed to chat with me about the hardships, challenges and moments she’s experienced over the past year. So let’s hear what she had to say…

How has the pandemic impacted your life as an influencer?

L: I’ll be honest, as an influencer, I don’t have the same enthusiasm as I did before the pandemic to create content. I’m constantly having creative blocks so it’s been extremely exhausting and challenging. I’m slowly starting to get back into the flow of things, but it can still be challenging when you’re not feeling as inspired as you used to feel. That’s something that’s been weighing really hard on me because creating content is something I’m so in love with and I love how happy and inspiring it can be for my followers. With that being said, the pandemic has made me realize that I love what I do and I’ll continue to do what I love – once things are up and running again, I’ll be back and ready!

What passions have you discovered while in quarantine?

L: I have always had a passion for interior design but I never realized how much I loved it and being in quarantine has sparked it even more (you should see my Pinterest page!). I’ve recently incorporated interior design & architecture into my social media. I’ve been sharing a lot of polls through my stories and have been finding that my followers love it just as much as I do. You gotta give the people what they want so it’s definitely something I’ll be sharing more frequently!

Has there been an eye-opening moment for you?

L: Definitely how important it was to reconnect with my family, particularly my brothers. I’ve always been close with my sister but with my brothers, it was a bit different. There wasn’t a big falling out or anything, we just all had our own things going on so we were never really close as adults. Now, we have nothing but time so we’re always FaceTiming and sending memes to each other. In a weird way, the pandemic brought us closer and it feels so good, I’m really happy.

What was it like being an influencer while also homeschooling Felix?

L: For me, the hardest part of the pandemic is keeping Felix entertained. Creating content is one thing, but doing so while keeping an almost 5-year-old occupied is next to impossible. Luckily, a lot of the brands I work with are really sweet and understanding so he’s been in a lot of the content I’ve created which definitely makes things a lot easier!

When it’s safe to travel again, where do you want to go?

L: Definitely Singapore, one of my best friends lives there with her fiance. I was supposed to visit her last year with Felix, but of course, that didn’t happen. Once things are back to normal, one of the first things I want to do is travel the world with Felix – there is nothing more educational than showing your children the world!

Are there any words of wisdom you want to share with parents and other influencers like you?

L: To the parents, we’re not perfect – not even close. What I’ve realized is that no matter what we do right or wrong, your child will always love you, no matter what. So don’t be so hard on yourself, give yourself a break and some credit!

To the influencers, don’t let the pandemic get to you. You may have some moments where you feel defeated and want to give up but what I’ve learned is that things fall back into place eventually. We should also take this time to embrace and support other content creators because we’re all so unique and can bring so much joy to one another! For example, one of my favourite creators I came across at the beginning of the pandemic was @dnice, an incredibly talented DJ who would live stream a new set every night at his “club quarantine”. His passion and commitment to playing music each night really helped make staying at home fun, and I really appreciated that.
