With over 2 billion downloads worldwide as of August 2020, TikTok is now the world’s 7th most used social platform. Featuring short-form videos that range from dance challenges, cleaning hacks, trending recipes, or just hilarious memes, TikTok has become a place for anyone to create content. To ensure content on the platform stays fresh, supporting creators is a big part of TikTok’s strategy. They’ve even set up a creator portal with many resources.
Of course, becoming a creator on TikTok means becoming familiar with video editing tools. There are so many platforms out there that range from simple tap and drop formats, to more robust platforms that even seasoned videographers use. To make it a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite video editing apps – take a look below!
iMovie is no stranger to being a good, basic video editor. An easy drag and drop video editor, you can achieve other effects outside of the TikTok platform like split screens. You can easily split and trim video clips, change their speed, and add some text with basic animations. Once you’re done editing, you can also export the video directly into TikTok to continue there!
Available on: iOS, macOS
Pros:
Cons:
Potentially even simpler than iMovie, PicPlayPost is a great app for easily resizing videos for multiple platforms. You can add custom text and a couple of stickers, but the app does have a paywall to unlock all of its features. We recommend this if you want to create content for more than just TikTok, or have a video you want to resize for TikTok!
Available on: iOS, Android
Pros:
Cons:
VSCO used to be one of the most popular apps for photo editing when posting for the #gram was at its peak. In more recent updates, they’ve unrolled great video editing features, while still keeping true to their aesthetic-first branding. VSCO itself is a social platform, so you can share your edits with other users!
Available on: iOS, Android

Cons:
Zoomerang is a great app for beginners who want tutorials when it comes to making TikTok videos. The app comes equipped with a wide range of editing tools, filters, and effects, outside of letting you snip videos together.
Available on: iOS, Android
Pros:
Cons:
Familiar to Adobe users, Premiere Rush is a powerful video editing tool with robust capabilities. If you’re a beginner, this might have a bit of a learning curve, but the interface is easy to understand and Adobe has great tutorials.
Available on: iOS, Android
Pros:
Cons:
Of course, we had to mention the TikTok in-app editor. While it may not be the most robust editor for intense transitions and effects, it is a great place to start with ample effects, filters, text and GIF options. You can either upload previously recorded content and create a video, or film directly on the app itself. This is a great place to start for beginners!
Available on: iOS, Android
Pros:
Cons:
As you can see, there are a ton of different video editing apps out there. While each one isn’t perfect, levering this list is a great way to start! You’ll find that editing videos for TikTok can take place on multiple apps depending on the video you’re trying to create. Good luck and hopefully see you on our FYP!
